Dr. Allison Wegmann “loves her challenging job!” It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but she enjoys the ability to collaborate with veterinarians of every specialty all under one roof. She grew up in Minnesota and moved to New Orleans in 1984. She is a Phi Beta Kappa and graduated Magna cum Laude from North Carolina State University with a B.S. in Zoology. She graduated at the top of her class from LSU School of Veterinary Medicine in 2000 and has enjoyed working at Metairie Small Animal Hospital ever since and became a partner in the hospital nineteen years ago.
She has a special interest in ultrasound, internal medicine, and soft tissue surgery. She is married to Randy Wegmann, an equine veterinarian. They have a daughter in college, Avery, who also rides horses competitively. The entire family participates in showing horses in the hunter/jumper sport, also known as show jumping. She has a mixed-breed dog, Jackman, and a cat named Truffle that completes their family. They live on 18 beautiful acres where they run a boarding/training facility named Tavia Equine Center.
One of the many advantages of services from Metairie Small Animal Hospital is the convenience of the availability of specialty care all under one roof, from the moment a puppy or kitten comes in for the first time until their dying breath. In the past, pet owners in veterinarian offices were often referred to universities or specialty practices for various medical needs which is inefficient and inconvenient for the pet owner.
Diagnosis is the first priority and the hospital’s complete diagnostic lab offers ultrasound diagnostics, CT scans, immediate test results, emergency surgery, digital radiography and ultrasound, oxygen therapy, blood pressure and continuous ECG monitoring, continuous infusion for IV fluids and medication, advanced pain management, endoscopy, nutritional support and more. Metairie Small Animal Hospital can treat any diagnosis as they house many veterinarians who specialize in oncology, chemotherapy, stem cell therapy, ophthalmology, cardiology, advanced surgery, emergency medicine, laser surgery, chemotherapy, dentistry and more.
Their emergency facility and advanced ICU is staffed with highly experienced veterinary team members who are equipped to respond to any medical or surgical need. From simple as a bee sting to severe trauma, their capable staff is prepared to care for your pet and help you through a stressful time. They strive to provide their patients' human companions with prompt, attentive, compassionate and personal service from the very first moment a patient arrives. This includes establishing a quick, clear line of communication to the primary care veterinarian when possible. The team wants you to be informed and comforted throughout the process, because they know how important and irreplaceable your beloved family friend is to you and your family.
They are prepared for any critical situation such as traumatic injuries, automobile accidents, respiratory emergencies, vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty urinating or defecating, shock or loss of consciousness, seizures, toxic reactions, poison ingestion, labor and pregnancy problems, blood in urine or feces, heatstroke, postoperative or post-anesthetic problems, pain management and inability or unwillingness to eat.
When every second counts, Metairie Small Animal Hospital's 24-hour vet team is there to help you and your pet overcome whatever medical crisis is taking place. Their emergency animal hospital provides immediate care for your pet without the need for an appointment or any advance notice whatsoever.
Originally named Metry Animal Hospital, the practice was founded by Dr. Tom Melius in 1946. In 1952, Metairie Small Animal Hospital was built at its present location at 101 Metairie Rd. One year later, Dr. Henry Melius joined the practice. From such humble beginnings, Metairie Small Animal Hospital has evolved and grown to keep pace with the ever-increasing technology and medical advances. The practice currently has seventeen doctors and over ninety employees on staff. In addition to the Main Hospital on Metairie Road, they also operate five Out-Patient Clinics in Kenner, Metairie, Lakeview, Freret Street, and the Marigny in New Orleans to better serve their clients. As a customer myself, I put my trust in this hospital and trust their never-ending compassion and caring for my pets and my parents’ pets for many years. They treat every pet as if it were their own. How fortunate for all animal lovers to have this institution within our midst!
Metairie Small Animal Hospital has been devoted to health maintenance and emergency care in the New Orleans metropolitan area for over 75 years. They offer comprehensive care for your pet 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Their services range from wellness exams to surgical procedures and everything in between. If you have questions about any of their services, please don’t hesitate to call 504-835-4266. One of their receptionists will be more than happy to assist you.
